Crisp for product and e-commerce video

Product video has a different success criterion from almost everything else. Nobody is going to praise your shot selection. The video works if the item is clearly visible, the colour is accurate, the file loads fast, and the two hundred other listings look like they came from the same shop.

Consistency and throughput, in other words, rather than craft.

The throughput problem

One product video is easy. A catalogue of them is a different job, and it is where most people lose their evenings. The same crop, the same grade, the same compression, applied identically, over and over.

Batch processing is the whole answer, and it is worth structuring your shoot around it: shoot every item the same way, at the same distance, under the same light, so one recipe applies to all of them. Footage that varies shot to shot forces you back into per-item decisions, which is the cost you were trying to avoid.

Colour accuracy matters more here than anywhere

In most genres colour is taste. In e-commerce it is a returns problem. A jumper that photographs slightly warmer than it is generates a stream of complaints and refunds, and no amount of styling compensates for it.

The practical measures are unglamorous. Shoot under consistent light rather than mixed daylight and tungsten. Include a reference in a test frame so you have something to check against. Grade to accurate rather than pleasing. And be aware that if your camera shoots HDR by default, footage will render differently across devices unless it is converted properly, which is a silent way to end up with inaccurate colour without ever making a colour decision.

One master, many shapes

The same product video usually needs to exist as 16:9 for the listing page, 9:16 for stories and short-form, and often 1:1 for a feed. Shoot wide enough to survive the crop, keep the full-frame master, and generate the shapes from it rather than shooting three times.

For a centred product on a plain background, cropping is usually fine and keeps full resolution. For anything where the composition matters, filling the frame with a blurred background loses nothing and reads as deliberate.

File size is a conversion metric

Product video is frequently watched on a phone on a weak connection by someone deciding whether to buy. A file that takes four seconds to start is a file many people never watch. Compression is not a quality compromise here, it is part of the job, and product footage on a plain background compresses extremely well because most of the frame is not changing.

Where Crisp is the wrong tool

It does not remove backgrounds or generate cutouts, so if your workflow depends on isolating the product from its surroundings, that lives elsewhere. It does not do motion graphics, animated price overlays or template-driven branding. Will upscaling make an old product video usable?

If it is soft because it is low resolution, yes, meaningfully. If it is soft because it missed focus or the highlights are blown, no. Those are not recoverable by any tool, and re-shooting is cheaper than the render time.
