Crisp for teachers and educators
Teaching video has an unusual constraint: most of the tooling assumes you are making something polished for an audience of strangers, when what you actually need is something clear, quick to produce, and safe to share within an institution.
The four problems that come up constantly
The file is too big to send. A one-hour lecture recording can be several gigabytes, and mail systems and LMS uploads reject it. Compression is the whole answer here, and it costs far less quality than people expect on screen-heavy content, because a static slide compresses extremely well.
The text in the screen recording is soft. This is usually not a resolution problem. Video stores colour at a quarter the detail of brightness, so coloured text on a contrasting background is the worst case for the format. Recording at a higher resolution helps more than raising the bitrate does.
The recording is an hour of which twelve minutes matter. Trimming before you do anything else is the single biggest time saver, both for you and for the student watching.
The audio is quiet in places. A lapel microphone that drifted, or a question from the back of the room. Levelling the quiet parts up rather than turning everything up is what makes a recording listenable on a laptop speaker.
Student footage and where it goes
This is the constraint that rules out most convenient tools. Footage containing identifiable students frequently cannot be uploaded to a third-party service, and the answer to "where is this processed" needs to be simple enough to put in an email to a head of department.

For lecture capture specifically, the compression step is the one worth learning. Slides and talking heads compress dramatically better than general footage, so you can often cut the file size by an order of magnitude with no visible difference on the screen a student will watch it on.

No. It burns in typed captions you provide, but it does not transcribe speech. If you need accessibility captions, use a transcription service or your institution's system and bring the text across.
How much can I compress a lecture recording?
More than you would expect. Slides and a mostly static presenter compress extremely well, so an order-of-magnitude reduction with no visible difference is common. Footage with lots of movement will not shrink nearly as far.

Chroma subsampling. Video stores colour at a quarter the resolution of brightness, and text is defined by a colour edge. Recording at a higher resolution gives the colour channel more samples and helps more than raising the bitrate.
Is student footage safe?
