How to fix blurry video on a Mac
Before reaching for any tool, work out which kind of blurry you have. Four different faults all get described the same way, and only two of them can be improved — spending an hour processing the other two is wasted effort.
1. Out of focus — not fixable
If the camera focused on the wrong thing, the detail was never recorded. Sharpening raises local contrast and creates halos around edges, which reads as crunchy rather than sharp. No tool recovers focus that was missed; this is a reshoot.
2. Motion blur — not fixable
A subject moving fast during a long exposure is smeared within each frame. That smear is the image. Frame interpolation can make motion smoother, but it can't unsmear the individual frames.
3. Low resolution — very fixable
Footage that's simply small — old 480p or 720p clips viewed on a modern display — is the ideal case for AI upscaling. The detail is there, there just isn't much of it, and a good model reconstructs plausible fine structure convincingly. This is where upscalers earn their reputation.
4. Compression damage — partly fixable
Footage sent through messaging apps, downloaded from social platforms, or captured at a low bitrate loses fine detail and gains blocky artefacts. Upscaling helps meaningfully, though it can't invent what the encoder discarded. Expect clear improvement, not a pristine result.
How to tell them apart in ten seconds
Pause on a frame and zoom in. Everything uniformly soft including static objects in the background points to focus or resolution. Moving subjects smeared while static background is sharp is motion blur. Blocky squares in flat areas like sky or shadow is compression. Fine speckle that changes every frame is noise, which is a different fix again.
Fixing the fixable ones
For low resolution and compression damage, AI upscaling is the right tool. Two rules make the difference between a good result and an obviously processed one:
- Denoise before upscaling, gently. Upscaling noise produces larger, more obvious noise. But heavy denoising strips real texture, so use the lightest setting that helps.
- Judge in motion. An upscale that looks great paused can shimmer during playback. Always watch it play before committing to a long render.
Doing it on a Mac without uploading
Crisp upscales on-device, so nothing leaves your machine and there's no queue or file limit. Import the clip, run Enhance, and compare against the original before exporting. The realistic expectation
A good upscale makes footage look like a better version of itself. It does not make a 2009 camcorder clip look like it was shot yesterday, and any tool whose marketing implies otherwise is showing you a favourable example. Test on your own worst clip and decide from that.
Sharpening is not the same as upscaling
Worth separating, because the sharpen slider is usually the first thing people reach for. Sharpening increases contrast at existing edges — it makes detail that's already there more visible, and it makes noise and compression blocks more visible too. Push it and you get white halos around every edge, which the eye reads as artificial immediately.
Upscaling reconstructs detail that isn't in the pixels, using a model trained on what real footage looks like. That's why it can improve a genuinely soft clip where sharpening only makes it crunchier. If your first instinct was the sharpen slider and the result looked worse, this is why.
