How to restore old home videos on a Mac

Do it in this order: deinterlace, denoise, upscale, then colour. Every step makes the next one harder if you take it out of turn, and the single most common mistake — upscaling first — permanently bakes tape noise into the picture as invented detail.

Before any of that: the capture matters more

If the tape has not been digitised yet, the capture decides your ceiling and no amount of software recovers what the capture threw away. A composite dub through a cheap USB dongle at 480p and a low bitrate is a worse starting point than a decent deck over S-Video into a real capture card, and the difference is much larger than anything an upscaler contributes afterwards.

It is also the only step with a deadline. Tape sheds oxide, and VHS decks stopped being manufactured years ago — the working ones are finite. Capture everything first, at the best quality you can manage, and restore later at your leisure. Restoration can wait; the tape cannot.

1. Deinterlace

Anything from a camcorder or off a tape is almost certainly interlaced: each frame is two fields captured a fiftieth of a second apart, woven together. On a modern display that shows up as comb-toothed horizontal stripes along every moving edge.

This must come first because every later step treats those stripes as real detail. An upscaler will happily sharpen the combing into a crisp permanent artefact, and a denoiser will read the regular pattern as texture worth keeping. Deinterlace, check a moving shot, and only then continue.

2. Denoise

Tape noise is not film grain. Film grain is fine and reasonably stable; tape noise is coarse, moves independently every frame, and sits heaviest in the shadows and in saturated reds — which is why a red jumper in a 1994 birthday video looks like it is boiling.

Denoise here, before any resolution change. An upscaling model has no way to distinguish noise from detail: feed it a noisy frame and it reconstructs the noise into confident, permanent texture. Once that happens no later denoise can remove it, because it is no longer noise — it is detail the model believes in.

Do not overdo it. Aggressive noise reduction on a moving subject produces a waxy, smeared look that is worse than the noise, and it does not show on a paused frame. Judge it playing.

3. Upscale

Now the resolution. VHS is roughly 333×480 lines of real luminance detail regardless of what the file says, so a 480p capture already contains more pixels than the tape held information for. Going to 1080p is realistic. Going to 4K is mostly the model inventing three quarters of the frame, and faces are where that shows first.

Judge the result in motion, at full size. Frames are upscaled independently, so a model's guesses vary slightly between them, and in flat areas — walls, sky, a car door — that reads as a crawling shimmer that a still comparison cannot show you.

4. Colour, last

Old tape drifts warm and loses saturation, and the fix is mostly white balance rather than a creative grade. Leave it until last because denoising and upscaling both change the noise floor and therefore the black point, so a grade set earlier will be wrong by the time you finish.

Resist making it look modern. Slightly warm and slightly soft is what 1994 looked like, and pushing an old transfer toward contemporary contrast and saturation usually reads as an error rather than a restoration.
