The best way to restore old home videos

Family tapes are the footage people care most about and the footage in the worst condition. Get the best capture you can, first

Everything downstream is limited by the digitisation, and this is the step people rush. A cheap USB capture stick that records a heavily compressed file has thrown away detail before any software sees it, and nothing recovers it afterwards. If the tapes matter, capture at the highest quality the hardware offers, keep that master file untouched, and do all experiments on copies.

Tape degrades physically as well — binder breaks down, magnetic signal weakens, and playback machines are getting rarer and less reliable. Deinterlace before anything else

Camcorder and broadcast formats are interlaced: each frame is two half-images taken a fraction of a second apart, woven together. On a period television that was invisible. On a Mac it shows as comb-shaped stripes across anything that moved.

Deinterlacing has to happen before denoising or enlarging, because those steps treat the striping as real picture content. Sharpen an interlaced frame and you get beautifully defined stripes; enlarge one and the combing doubles in size. Then clean, then enlarge — in that order

Tape noise, colour bleed and low-light speckle should come out before the picture is made bigger. Enlarging first magnifies every flaw and hands the cleanup a harder problem, and it is the usual cause of restorations that look soft and artificial. Clean first, enlarge last.

Enlargement is also where expectations need calibrating. A tape holds roughly a quarter of the detail of a modern 1080p recording. Going to 4K does not create the missing information; a good model produces a convincing, sharper-looking picture built on what is there. That is a real improvement and worth doing, but it is reconstruction rather than recovery.

A realistic plan for a box of tapes

Capture everything first, while the deck still works, and back the masters up twice. Then pick a single representative tape and work out your settings on it rather than experimenting across all of them.
