What Topaz is actually selling
Not resolution — temporal consistency. Its models look at several frames together rather than upscaling each one independently, which is the difference between a result that holds still and one that shimmers in flat areas. That is a genuinely hard problem, it is the axis most reviews never test because it is invisible in screenshots, and Topaz is the best-known name at it for a reason.
If you restore footage professionally and $299/year is a line item on an invoice, that is a defensible purchase. The complaint that followed October 2025 was not about quality — it was that people who had bought a perpetual licence were moved onto a recurring one.

Breadth. Twenty-two modules including DVD and Blu-ray ripping, format conversion, deinterlacing and audio tools, for a one-time $319.99. If you are digitising a shelf of discs, nothing else here competes and the price is fair for what it is.
The catch is Windows. UniFab's centre of gravity is NVIDIA GPUs on Windows, and a Mac user is buying a port. That matters more than it sounds for GPU-bound work.
What Crisp is selling
Being cheap enough not to think about, native to the machine, and a timeline in the same app — so you cut first and upscale the finished sequence once at export, rather than enhancing footage you later discard. Its heaviest mode peaks around 11GB, which is why it runs on a 16GB MacBook Air rather than needing a workstation.
What it does not have: Topaz's multi-frame temporal models, UniFab's disc tools, and any kind of multicam. On a hard restoration where shimmer is the problem, Topaz will likely give you a better frame.
Picking, honestly
