The best video compressor for Mac
Usually this starts with a limit — an email attachment cap, an upload that keeps failing, or a drive that is full. Crisp compresses video on your Mac, offline. The useful thing to understand first is which setting actually controls file size, because most people reach for the wrong one.
Bitrate sets the size. Resolution sets what you notice.
File size is close to bitrate multiplied by duration. Resolution influences how much bitrate a clip needs to look right, but it is not the dial that determines the number of megabytes. A 4K file at 5 Mbps is smaller than a 1080p file at 20 Mbps, every time.
So the order matters. Lower the bitrate first and watch what happens to the picture. Only if it starts falling apart — blocky skies, smeared motion — should you reduce the resolution, because at that point you are asking too few bits to describe too many pixels and giving it fewer pixels is the honest fix. How much bitrate a clip needs
There is no single correct number, because content matters more than the format. A locked-off interview against a plain wall compresses beautifully: little changes between frames, so the codec has little to encode. Falling snow, confetti, rippling water, a handheld shot through trees — these change nearly every pixel every frame and will look poor at a bitrate that flatters the interview.
Rather than trusting a chart, encode thirty seconds of your busiest section, look at it, and adjust from there. That sample tells you more than any recommended setting, and it takes a minute.

If the file is going to a client, a school, or a stranger, H.264 avoids the message that says the file cannot be opened. If it is going into your own archive or onto your own devices, HEVC saves real space for the same picture.

Compression damage stacks
Every lossy encode throws away information permanently. Compress an export that was already compressed and you are discarding detail from something that had already lost some, which is how a clip ends up with the blocky, waxy look people describe as over-processed. Keep the original and always re-encode from it. If a file has been through a messaging app it has already paid this cost once, and it will never look as good as the same footage taken straight from the camera.
The free option worth trying first
ffmpeg with a constant-quality setting is the most reliable compressor most people will ever need, and it costs nothing. You give it a quality target instead of a bitrate and it spends bits where the picture needs them. It is excellent, and it is a command line — which is fine for a one-off and tiring when you are iterating toward a size limit and want to see each result.
